I too hate "small talk", but most of these functions usually involve food, and I love food. Even a crappy hamburger or someone's mediocre taco dip can make the uncomfortable silence that follows my relative's forced inquiries into my personal life seem bearable. Plus, having a child has kind of taken the focus off of me at these gatherings, so that helps.

My family is the bees' knees....I love hangin' out with 'em no matter the occasion.

I like to see my relatives, but when I only see them twice a year I have absolutely nothing to say to them. I don't know what is going on in their lives to even ask them about.

It's always the same thing. My aunt tries on my new pair of glasses, I ask my 13 year old cousin about her French class, say hello to everyone else, and spend the rest of the time hanging out with my immediate family. Sometimes I'll compliment my other cousins on their cute kids but that's it.

(I blame Jason Yates for taking away my ability to make small-talk. After 5 years with him I can longer have a decent conversation.)
